The short version
- AI answers build on pages they can find and read, and often cite them.
- Specific pages win: capacity, location, kind of stay, facts a planner needs.
- A rental with no website of its own gives the AI little to work with.
- Check it yourself: ask the questions your guests ask and note who is named.
The new first page
For years the goal was page one of Google. Now a growing number of travelers type the whole question into ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google itself and read a short answer that names two or three places. If you are not in that answer, the guest may never scroll far enough to find you.
What the answer draws on
These tools build their answers from pages on the web they can find and read, and they often link to the pages they used. Google says its AI features show links to supporting pages and that the usual advice for being found applies: helpful, reliable content written for people.
A specific question needs a specific page. "Lake house for a 20-person family reunion near Albany" is best answered by a page about exactly that: how many it sleeps, the beds, the kitchen, the lake, the drive time, the price range. A general homepage rarely is.
What to publish
- One page per kind of stay: reunions, retreats, holidays, long stays.
- Plain facts in the text: capacity, bedrooms, beds, parking, distance to the nearest town, rules that matter to groups.
- Answers to real questions, taken from what guests actually ask you in messages.
- Local guides that only someone who knows the area could write.
- Consistency: the same facts on your site, your listing and your Google Business Profile.
Check where you stand
Write down five questions your best guests would ask. Ask each one in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google. Note who is named. If it is never you, the fix is not a trick; it is the missing page.
The STR Content Engine writes those pages every month, and the Domination tier runs this check for about 20 questions each month.
Questions hosts ask
Can I pay to be recommended by ChatGPT?
Not in the answers themselves. The way in is to publish clear, specific, accurate pages that answer the questions guests ask, on a site the AI tools can read.
Does my Airbnb listing count?
Sometimes a listing is cited, but you don't control it and the booking still goes through the platform. Your own pages are the part you control.
How do I know if I'm being named?
Ask the tools the questions your guests ask and write down who is named. The STR Content Engine's top tier does this monthly for about 20 questions and fixes the pages that lose.
